The First Product I Tried to Sell

Back in mid-2019 to early 2020, I came across a product on my Facebook feed that caught my attention. It was the laser epilator by Hey Silky Skin, a brand that had millions of views and was selling extremely well. As a beginner drop shipper, I thought this was a winning product and decided to sell it on my Shopify store.

Why I Decided to Sell It and Why It Didn't Work

The laser epilator had a wide market of people who wanted to purchase it, mainly women. It also had an amazing wow factor because it could get rid of hair in unwanted places very quickly. On top of that, it had a good profit margin, with a cost of around $20 to $30 on AliExpress and a selling price of $100 or more.

However, I made some critical mistakes that led to the failure of my first drop shipping store. First, the product was saturated, with a lot of sellers trying to sell the same product using similar creatives. Second, my store was terrible, with poor copywriting, generic branding, and no reviews. Third, I used ripped creatives, which Facebook can detect and suppress.

Lessons Learned from My Failure

Lesson 1: Find a Unique Variant of a Winning Product

One of the biggest mistakes I made was trying to sell the same product as everyone else. Instead, I should have found a unique variant of the laser epilator that produced the same results but looked different and caught people's attention. This way, I could stand out from the competition and increase my chances of making sales.

Lesson 2: Build a Better Store

Another mistake I made was building a crappy general store instead of a one-product store. A one-product store would have helped me establish an authority figure for that product in this space and branded the entire website to make it look like I was the original creator or brand of that product. I should have also added good reviews, a warranty, and a simple logo to increase customer trust and conversion rates.

Lesson 3: Create Your Own Video Ads

Finally, I should have created my own video ads instead of using ripped creatives. By creating my own videos, I could stand out from the competition and show customers why they should buy from my brand instead of a multi-seven figure brand that already has amazing ads and website.

Conclusion

In conclusion, my first drop shipping store failed because of saturation, a terrible store, and ripped creatives. However, I learned some valuable lessons that you can apply to your store to increase your chances of making sales. Find a unique variant of a winning product, build a better store, and create your own video ads.
